What is Mariprist

Mariprist is a high quality, effective and safe medication for abortion of early pregnancy, up to 9 weeks. It provides a non-invasive and convenient alternative to surgical abortion.

Mariprist contains one tablet (200 mg) of mifepristone and four tablets (200 mcg each) of misoprostol. It is recommended for early medical abortion by doctors around the world and the World Health Organisation.

Mariprist is up to 98% effective when used according to the dosing instructions provided, and should only be used after consultation with a healthcare professional.

How does Mariprist work

Medical abortion is the use of one or more medications to end an unwanted pregnancy. It is most effective when used early in the pregnancy and the process often resembles an early miscarriage.

Mariprist works to terminate early pregnancy through a 2-step process:

  1. The mifepristone taken first, detaches the pregnancy from the uterus (womb) and makes the womb more receptive to misoprostol.

  2. The misoprostol taken later works by causing contractions of the womb, and softens the cervix to allow the expulsion of the pregnancy.

When can Mariprist be used

Mariprist can be used as early as when you miss your period (4 weeks), and up to 9 weeks from your last menstrual period. Use our quick checklist to see if Mariprist is right for you, and our pregnancy calculator will also help you work out how many weeks pregnant you are.

How to prevent further pregnancy

You can get pregnant again soon after an abortion, but contraception can help you avoid unwanted pregnancies. There are a number of contraceptive methods and which one is right for you will depend on your circumstances. You can read lots of information about short term, long term and permanent contraceptive methods on this website.
