Compare methods

Here is a comparison of each method looking at how effective it is and how long the contraceptive protection lasts.

Most of the contraceptive options are quickly reversible, with fertility returning as soon as the woman stops using the contraceptive. The exceptions to this are the permanent methods, such as female sterilisation or vasectomy and the injectable, it can take on average 5-6 months for the fertility to return after stopping the injection.

It is important to offer women who want it access to contraceptive advice as soon as possible after childbirth or an abortion. Depending on their circumstances women can fall pregnant very soon after these events.
